THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Washington, D.C. – Museums employ different approaches for illuminating works of art, most notably daylight and artificial lighting. In September 2016, the East Building galleries of the National Gallery of Art, which house the modern collection and several temporary exhibition spaces reopened after three years of renovation. The museum preserved its natural lighting strategy with a new, more advanced, system. The new and advanced daylight functions to filter and diffuse natural daylight from the skylights above before it reaches the galleries below. This system ensures daylight will not damage sensitive works of art.
